10 of the Most Playful Cat Breeds for Active Families

If you’re looking for a cat that won’t just walk around or lie in bed all day, you need an active and playful cat breed. There’s a common misconception that cats aren’t affectionate or playful with their owners or other cats, however, that’s not true for all of these furry friends. Some felines are extremely playful, have lots of energy, and want to essentially chase anything that moves whether that’s a toy or yourself as you try to get some chores done.

Certain cat breeds are best for those owners with a more active and engaged lifestyle, such as the Abyssinian and Burmese, although many cats can showcase a playful side the more you get to know them. We talked with two vets to learn more about these 10 playful cat breeds.

    Siamese

Think of Siamese cats as being your best friend, or well, attached to your hip at a minimum. Not only do these medium-sized cats love attention, but they also tend to follow their people around both day and night. “Siamese cats are very prominent and can have high energy and be very curious to explore the house and seek your attention more,” says Grant Little, DVM, and veterinarian expert on JustAnswer.

Siamese cats love to climb, whether that’s on cat trees or other tall structures that leave them room to move and be free. You’ll win some bonus points by having plenty of interactive puzzle and teaser toys to keep them entertained.

Breeds to Avoid

While there are many playful cat breeds, there are a few that tend to skew more reserved and quiet such as Scottish folds and Persians.

“The gene responsible for the folded ears in Scottish folds is also associated with an increased risk of degenerative joint disease, which can further exacerbate joint and mobility issues as the cat ages,” says Crow. “Potential owners of Scottish fold cats should be aware of these health risks and limitations that can impact play and mobility.”

Additionally, Persian cats are known for their flat-faced, or brachycephalic, facial structure, which can predispose them to respiratory issues that can impact how playful they are, Crow says.
